THE MOTHER ROAD
100 Years of Route 66
In 1926 Route 66 became a corridor for automobile tourism. Roadside motels, restaurants, and businesses popped up along the Mother Road—many with neon signs beckoning the long distance traveler .
I was drawn to neon signs for the trifecta of their color, rust, and typography. It is my intention to recreate these handmade signs with the same craftsmanship that the original artisans envisioned. My paintings however, capture the time that has passed. The rust, the wear and tear of these signs are both portraiture of the American landscape and memento mori.
